Mauna Loa is an *ideal* location for measuring CO2 for several reasons...


First the prevailing winds from the Pacific (generally) blow any emitted gases from the volcano away from the measurement systems. On the rare occasions when the winds do blow gases from volcano to the measurement systems, it is obvious and those readings are corrected or ignored.

Also, due to the location, the observatories are away from population centers and above vegetation, so they don't get spurious readings. Similarly, the Pacific winds bring in "fresh" mixed air from high in the atmosphere, so they don't get fluctuations due to other activity.

Finally, this isn't the only place they do these measurements. See the image below. They measurements are quite consistent with other locations.
