Lost went wrong in season 2 or 3, IMO
That was the year they started talking before the new season about the show really being about "the characters." When the real story was the mystery of the island and the smoke monster. That mystery captivated everyone, and made the show a monster (and unexpected) success.
In contrast, the focus on characters led to whole episodes about individuals and couples before they even got to the island, and included such fascinating plots as someone's father not thinking her fiance was successful enough, and a main character getting a tattoo. Around the 4th season, I stopped watching. And I started again the last half of the last season.
And THEN the answer behind the mystery was disappointing.
