Everything about Lost ended up being crazy, but it's too bad that...
...you dipped out in S4 because the mostly-1970's set S5 was a hoot. All the time travel stuff ended up being pointless to the overall mythology of the show, but they did a great job telling stories every week.
Really the lesson people should be learning from these shows is that the mythology is always nonsense in serialized storytelling. It never means anything. It's just texture. Backdrop for the story. If you're waiting for the S7 (or whatever) writers room to pay off mysteries that were hinted at by the S2 writers room, pretty good chance you're going to be disappointed. Most of the time it might as well be a whole different show.
