And an exploding car creating a glass debris field? well, that is quite a remote scenario in the real world, and even if it is a thought, it is addressed in the windshield, which is laminated safety glass, with a layer of plastic in between that keeps it from shattering. They COULD use that for the side windows, but tempered glass is better. Specifically, because when broken, it shatters into tiny pebbles and allows egress without shards that could cut you. Automobile glass is actually some pretty impressive stuff.

Check out the video of basic tempered glass production. Check out the part where he bangs in with a hammer. The edges are the vulnerable part.
