I believe the locks may have had a dual purpose

At least I could see the designers and the feds wanting to address both issues at the same time. I guess that is why I am curious to see if the courts determine there was a structural flaw in the design of the door. Also, I will be curious to see how Tesla presents its defense. Particular if Tesla tries to portray the driver's death was because the police officer and maybe even the fire department didn't do everything humanly possible to try to save the driver from the burning vehicle. It could be a risky approach, but effective if Tesla can show enough evidence that there isn't a technical flaw in the design of the door.
