Grant was Nick Saban.
He had all the resources. Nobody is arguing that he was anything but good, but it's not like things were even. When Saban was at Michigan State, here were his records...
6-5-1
6-6
7-5
6-6
9-2
It was only after Saban went somewhere with great resources that he was considered an elite coach. Put grant in command of the Army of Northern Virginia and he would have lost. Just like anybody else would have done. Like you said, his best attribute was that he understood how to win the war, which inexplicably nobody else in the North seemed to understand at the time.
