From what I learned in Galena IL (his adopted home) he was a puppet pol
He came back a war hero (he'd only lived there a bit working for his brother after he failed as a farmer). Galena at the time was a huge trading hub in leather and lead (the Galena river is now nearly a trickle because of the sludge dumped into it during the civil war) and there was a guy there named Washburne who was a king maker of sorts. He ran Grant's entire political life and parlayed it into political appointments, including eventually being the Ambassador to France.
The picture they paint of Grant is a guy who showed up a failure, went off to war and came back a hero, stayed a couple months then left with Washburne to become president then traveled around the world until he died. Other than the civil war, he was pretty much just a putz, but the war allowed him to be a very successful putz.
