It tries to give Grant credit for not letting the Southerns in Vicksburg
leave with their salves. It wasn't that he wanted the salves free. He understood the more slaves he took away from the South, the hard it would be for them to win the war.
He really understood resources, supply lines, and how to cut the enemy's resources. Cutting off the water into Vicksburg. Burning the Shenandoah Valley because it was feeding Lee's army. It's amazing the Northern Generals before him were so unwilling to fight because Lee had been running circles around them. In that way, he was actually a better General than Lee.
Lee's biggest mistake not understanding western Maryland was different than eastern Maryland. When he headed up to PA, he thought he'd get support from the western Maryland counties. They didn't. Even if he had won in Gettysburg, he couldn't have gone much further north. He was way too far from his supply lines at that point.
