Agreed. Poor decision on their part.
Lee knew it. He was aggressive by nature, but he also knew that the South had to win that war within the first two years. No way they could win a protracted war of attrition. I think that partly explains some of the risks he took (Pickett's charge is a primary example). He had to take great risks, otherwise the South had no chance to win. If he just sat back and rode it out, there was a 100% chance that the South would lose militarily. By being aggressive, he at least had a puncher's chance, with a little bit of luck.
