I like Alpine Approach shoes for hiking these days. You can get them


without GTX. My go to brands are La Sportiva, Millet and Mammut currently, but I still have some Salewa's that I wear from time to time depending on the mood du jour. The trick is to try these things on and go with what fits. (I'm a bit on the medium to narrow side.)

Also, fit the shoe to the terrain you're planning on walking...more rocky, requires a stiffer mid-sole, but if you're mostly hanging out on the east side of VA, a lighter more light hiker should work nicely.
