Well...didn't want to get too technical on why I have so many pairs, but...
My Millet's are mostly used in the mountains below snowline during summers because they have a full rubber rand and stiff mid-sole to rocky approaches. My La Sportiva are one step up from a trail runner where they help keep dirt out, breath well, have a lot of cushion and traction. My Mammut is more of a cross mountain biking shoe, but does a lot of what my millet's do. Last, my Salewa's are a true approach shoe where they are great with ledges and side edging in a scramble/low rated climb...sticky soles for rocks.
I have many boots too, but that depends more on the load(s) I'm carrying, weather, terrain..... Going from breathable for summer hiking where support is needed to winter/crampon type of work.
