Wash Co Va had paper and plastic bins at the convenience stations but...
they have since been removed. I asked the guy there and he said that the plastics, in particular, were shipped to China for processing. When the import tariffs were imposed a couple years back that made the costs too high so China stopped taking them. With no recycling customer they just ended up back in the landfill, so they removed the bins.
That was a real shame to me. We had started separating the plastics in a big cardboard box in our garage. I found that a large portion of our waste was just that - plastic bottles, wrappers, etc. I would just load up the box about every two weeks to take to the convenience center and offload the plastics into the bin. Saved a bunch of money on kitchen garbage bags. It's a shame to see it go. I felt like I was actually doing some small part to help the environment.
