I think it's a huge waste of money.

I know it's supposed to solve all our needs for the Navy, Army, AF, & Marines. When in fact the original AF one needed huge redesign foe use by the Navy, and huge redesign to replace the Harrier. And apparently it's near useless in a ground support role.

And I suspect an unvarnished answer from the Navy would be they much prefer a twin engine plane, rather than a single engine plane. If a F/A=18 loses an engine 150 miles from the carrier, the pilot can still come home. If the engine on a F-35 goes out, 150 miles from the carrier. the pilot goes into the sea.
