My wife is a speech therapist in a hospital. The majority of her patients

Are just like your dad. It is sad. The good news is, he was recommended for a feeding tube. The other option is that a feeding tube won't help and to just keep them comfortable in their remaining days/weeks.
Rarely will a patient of that age come off a feeding tube. A younger patient is more likely to benefit from feeding therapy to be able to eat solid food again.
You have to weigh the pros and cons at that age. I would imagine the feeding tube is because he can't swallow and/or aspirates. If that's happening, the chance of choking is really high.
It's a tough situation indeed. Our daughter (9) has a feeding tube and likely will for her entire life. Hers was due to her disability and she got it before coming into foster care. We have worked for the last 8 years to get her to where she can drink a bottle of Pediasure for her meals. The tube is for her medicines, extra water, and when she's sick and can't keep food down or won't eat.
