@great2bahokie - I am not sure what the circumstance of your father's stay is within the rehab facility, so I realize this may be a moot point, but going to post it just in case.

Medicare covers up to 100 days of skilled nursing - ie rehab facility. After that 100 days, it is up to the individial to pay for the care, which is going to be very expensive. Caveats to this are: 1) if you father is in a LifePlan Community (aka Continuing Care Retirement Community or CCRC), then nursing care may be part of the guaranteed monthly fee he pays; or 2) he is on Medicaid.

For many, they enter the facility on the Medicare stay, then quickly spend through all of their assets and eventually end up on Medicaid, which will then cover the cost of the nursing home. But it is important to note that Medicaid only covers the stay and not the skilled nursing/rehab services, which are covered by Medicare will have been used up. Your father may qualify for "outpatient" or Part B rehab, but technically that will only be administered if there is improvement or hope for improvement.

An elder care attorney can probably help you all understand what to expect with respect to the services that may be available and potentially with asset planning and other difficult decisions.

Again, I don't know anything about your dad's situation, so the above is based on generalities. In my experience, people do not realize the limitations that Medicare has with respect to nursing home care and it can be very difficult for a family to manage.
