The only rule is there are no rules. Also, I've heard for years that


the big conferences are going to freeze out Notre Dame--not play them in order to force them into a conference. Well, that didn't happen and it won't. ND has plenty of teams that want to play them. And here is another dose of reality. The other conferences don't care if ND joins a conference. The SEC couldn't care less--the SEC worked with ND on the CFP-12 which preserves ND independence. Moreover, the B1G for CERTAIN doesn't want ND to join the ACC.

WRT to USC, they will continue to play ND for the Jeweled Shillelagh every year. That rivalry is older than the ACC itself.

And one more: by ND tipping its hat in the preference of the ACC, it got the B1G off their heels and actually has the B1G rooting FOR ND NOT to join the ACC. It is a masterclass in triangulation to be quite honest.
