Here’s some honesty……
I don’t like Notre Dame. I hope they lose every game they play except when they play UVA.
That said, I think that ND should not join a conference. I believe that college football is a better place with ND as is. Everything that is happening in college sports right now is diminishing it. The last thing it needs is more destruction of what was.
As a kid, it would have been no fun watching Batman without the Joker, Penguin, Riddler and Catwoman. We all knew those folks were evil and had to lose. But without them, Batman would have been irrelevant. And if one of them occasionally succeeded, their future demise was all the sweeter.
Likewise, ND as an independent, bucking the arguments and demands for conference affiliation, is necessary to maintain an element of relevancy to college football generally. Indeed, as a fan, beating ND as a conference foe has all the meaning of beating Pitt. Beating ND as an independent, feels especially good. That’s because ND is a college football icon and that status would be forever lost as part of a conference.
So I say, let’s hate on an independent ND but be thankful that it’s there, as is, like grandma’s tough Thanksgiving turkey…..Because when it’s gone, college football will not be in a better, or happier, place.
