Larry Bird. 2 to tie, 3 to win, let’s roll the dice. Because you are trying to accomplish 2 things at that instance: score and leave them little to no time to drive and score themselves. You have to designate one of those things as primary and one secondary. Scoring does some good but you don’t want to leave a minute on the clock. Obviously not scoring is not helpful even if you run out the clock. Only a true superstar can do both. You have to call a play that gives you a TD, regardless if in bounds, out of bounds, etc if it does not score. We are not good or imaginative enough in that situation to shoot a 3.
No idea if this is what the coaches were thinking or trying to do but if so this is just another example of outthinking yourself.
