Well you successfully identified HALF of the problem ...

but if you really want to solve this problem you better be prepared to pay a bit more for your products and services. I know in my county there is no way to get ahead (or even tread water) with the low wages most service jobs provide. The cost of housing and child care is way beyond what can be supported.
So yeah the "income" gap between working and not working is not wide enough- there has to be more incentive to work. And a lot of that is providing a real living wage to folks who do the less glamourous jobs that we all depend on.
