FWIW the NCAA does have automatic bids for its NCAA DI Football Playoffs
though. Technically every FCS conference is eligible to receive an automatic bid. However, the Ivy League, MEAC, and SWAC have decided to not participate in the tournament for various reasons.
Instead, the MEAC and SWAC decided to have their champions play each other in the Celebration Bowl which is essentially the restarting of the Heritage Bowl but maybe under different ownership. Hence the new bowl name. Now the MEAC and SWAC could still have at-large teams in the playoffs which makes for an odd arrangement. Also, remember the SWAC is currently the only FCS conference to play a conference championship game in football which is another reason why the SWAC's champion doesn't play in the NCAA DI Playoffs. I believe the game is played the same weekend as the other FBS CCGs.
