Why do (presumably wealthy) UVA alums not support their own school? Your original premise is that UVA has to make some kind of academic Sophie's Choice to become a real football school, yet high quality academic institutions overcome this problem all the time.

The real issue is that football success has to become important and prioritized at UVA, and it has not been. That's what VT did, and to some extent it has been successful, although recent data isn't all that supportive of that statement unfortunately.
