If the Power 5 were really interested in crowning the best team

This will turn into another creative realignment that will never happen. However, if the leading people truly wanted to crown a national champion, you would have to do some realignment. You would have to adopt some NFL-type line-ups that would also help with scheduling. We can ensure some fairness, and yes, everyone who wants to be a part of the Power 5 (Power 6 in my landscape) would have to be a part of a conference.

First, we add BYU to have 66 major teams - the rule is laid out that each conference has 11 teams. Some of the decisions on who gets "kicked out" will make most of the conferences more regional (except for one because of Texas). You will play everyone in your conference - no conf title game. You will have 2 OOC match-ups - this will be determined by the prior year's results (there would be a formula in place - still undecided if it will be spread out or whether Conf A teams will play all of Conf B teams. I think I would just say #1 Conf A team plays at #2 Conf B team and play #7 Conf C team at home (basically, each team will try to play a team from the top half of one conference and one team from the bottom-half of another conference.

The play-offs would be 8 teams - 6 conference champions and 2 at-large (the 2 at-larges can come from the same conference). The teams can be ranked (can use the same play-off committee) and the first round gets played at the better team's home field - the committee will try to line up teams to avoid re-matches in first round. They will be played on the weekend after the conference championships are currently played - can move Army-Navy back a week. The semis and championship are played like they are now. The losers of the first round can play against each other in major bowls.

Here is what the conferences would look like:
ACC

VT
UVA
Wake
UNC
NC St
Duke
Clemson
GT
FSU
Miami
ND

New

Colorado
Neb
Kansas
K State
BYU
TCU
Tex A&M
Arkansas
Mizzou
Iowa St
Baylor

B10

Minn
Mich
Mich St
Ohio St
Illinois
Indiana
Purdue
N'west
Wisc
Iowa
Penn St

B12

Texas
Okl
Okl St
Tex Tech
WVU
L'ville
Pitt
Rutgers
Syracuse
BC
Maryland

P12

Wash
Wash St
Oregon
Or St
Stanford
Cal
Ariz
Ariz St
USC
UCLA
Utah

SEC

Florida
Georgia
Tenn
Alabama
Auburn
Miss
Miss St
Kentucky
Vandy
S Car
LSU

And my dream world ends right there - I know this will never happen because the leaders aren't worried about who the best is - just what can make the most money - conferences would probably never work with each other to come up with this - money would have to be pooled together - possibly making more money for the sport w/ overall TV rights, but egos would get in the way of that. It would be too simple, and a lot less arguing over polls - oh well, it was fun.
