My idea is similar.
Round robin play. 7 conferences. 1 at-large bid. 8 teams in playoff.
Smaller ACC (+ UMd)
Smaller SEC
Smaller B1G
Smaller PAC
Old Big 8 (OU, UNL, CU, Mizzou et al)
Old SWC (A&M, UT, Ark, et al)
Old Big East (PSU, Miami, VT, BC, Pitt, SU, RU, etc.)
ND and BYU can join one of the conferences or be indy. But to make the tourney as an indy they have to be better than all the runners up and the G5 champs. Committee selects the one at-large (lucky dog).
A conference will have a minimum of 8 and maximum of 12. But round robin in a must. No divisions.
I'd expect ND to join the Big East and BYU to join the SWC or the Big 8 in such a scenario. But conferences can add teams if they want as long as they maintain round robin capacity.
Theoretically, VT would likely have room to stay in the ACC under this plan as well. But having go to the BE would be good for balance between the conferences.
