Rose Parade is probably a factor


The Rose Parade brings more people physically (~700k) into Pasadena than the bowl game (~90k). As long as the bowl game is associated with the parade (i.e. run by the same organization), it's going to be NYD (except when NYD is Sunday, when it'll be on a Monday - a promise made to the local churches long ago).

That said, I don't see any logistical reason why the bowl game couldn't be a different day in those years where they are one of the semifinal games.
