(Disclaimer: I bought a bunch of Henckels 4-Star knives, but they are now collecting dust.)

I would go with a set of Ginsu (type) knives. Less expensive, and they work extremely well. I've been using these for several years, and haven't required sharpening (yet). My Henckels require constant sharpening.

If you want to go up a step, look at the Shun knives.

Cost no object, start looking for custom Japanese knives. Those are way more expensive, but the best I've seen. They will require some maintenance/sharpening...
