I believe Hutch is considering moving money from 401k into an IRA, where

there will be more flexibility on investment choices.

A self directed IRA where you pick your own stock investments should be pretty straightforward. But I'm not familiar with the ins and outs of investing in real estate via an IRA. I would only suggest that you make sure you maintain adequate diversification. Don't roll your whole 401k into a single property.
