I have one. Our country club was selling some bonds to finance a project

and I wanted to use money from my regular IRA to buy them. Also wanted to defer taxes on the annual interest paid on the bonds. A local bank set up the self directed IRA and I pay a fee of $100 a year for them to manage it. I'm very satisfied with the arrangement which is pretty much on autopilot. Next year I will be liable for Required Minimum Distributions from my IRA and I will just add the amount needed to cover the self directed IRA from the distribution from my regular IRA
