The question is, will it escalate to more direct war between nations or remain a proxy war.

Vietnam and Korea were proxy wars of the democracy vs communism war that ended before it escalated to open war. In most cases it stayed a Cold War because there proxies didn't want to die for an ideal few really cared about.

Right now every major military power has troops fighting or supporting a side in a war that on its surface is between Muslim theocracy vs secular governments. But behind that are 3 superpowers (a loose western coalition, Russia and China) in a proxy war. The proxies in this one have religion on their side and a mass of soldiers who have not evolved past where most of the world was 500 years ago. They are willing to die for the proxy because they have been convinced they are soldiers of their god rather than their govt.
