I agree that Virginia is not Sweden--our demographics are different, our
transportation networks are different, and our culture it different.
My point is simply that you're making judgments about what it irresponsible based on incomplete knowledge. I'm not trying to make excuses; I'm merely seeking explanations for why things are different.
I wear a mask when in public, but I seriously doubt its effectiveness. My skepticism comes from prior studies--with control groups--on influenza that showed no significant benefit. Perhaps the COVID-19 transmission process is different enough that masks are effective, but it will take time for the science to be sorted out. The article linked below has a quote in it that aligns closely with my thoughts: "It's actually not helpful for scientists to hide behind a curtain of certainty. There is uncertainty about masks. But that doesn't mean we shouldn't be wearing them. "I would say, 'Mask use is our best judgment right now, and we will tell you if we get more evidence."
That uncertainty makes it hard to draw the line between taking acceptable risks and engaging in irresponsible behavior. (COVID parties are stupid, but is having lunch outside at a restaurant with a few friends?)
