Like I said, it's a continuum. Wearing a mask is probably safer than not. Failing to wear a mask for one trip out of the house is likely not going to be fatal. Refusing to wear a mask, period, is not particularly responsible.

Any given interaction with other people is a potential risk. While it's absolutely true that even a super-careful person might hit unlucky, it's also true that the more risky choices someone makes the more likely they are to become infected or spread their own to others.

The spring and early summer of serious social distancing has made it clear that it helps. Now that we're into the mid-summer with more and more things opening up, it is equally clear that some folks are taking things a little too lightly. Somewhere in the middle is the sweet spot, I'd guess. I'd really like for that to be achieved by the majority of us making smart individual decisions, rather than forcing Governors to shut down businesses and then bitching about that later.
