Could be a two-edged sword.
On one hand, you hit the nail on the head about the trend of declining interest in seeing live sports. A smaller venue that looks great on television where every seat is filled and it's comfortable (versus those hip-squeezer seats we used to have) is great forward thinking.
On the other, if the team is successful and people realize it's a great and comfortable experience, more will buy season tickets, and to increase revenue, the Hokies might sell more season tickets but reduce the number of student tickets. First year of the Dean Dome UNC did that and the atmosphere went from rowdy and alive at Carmichael to golf claps and a wine and cheese party feel in the new building.
