On one hand you’re correct however, VT could be and already may have
Marginalized the “average” fan who likes to come see basketball but didn’t want to pay $30+ for regular season college bball games that big picture are somewhat irrelevant. Yes they’re relevant for getting INTO the tourney but there will never be any home bball games that decide a championship. Let’s say VT is playing Duke to get a double bye in ACCT in late Feb/early March...that’s about as big as it gets whereas a November football game vs Pitt or UNC may decide the Coastal title and a chance to win 1-2 more games to get to the football playoff.
If tickets to the Duke bball game are $50+, why would I do that when in 1-3 weeks I may want to be forking out even more than that for an ACCT or NCAAT trip.
The reason seats are empty now is they’re listed as sellouts and those who may want to go don’t want to pay higher $ for a single basketball game on a cold possibly iffy weather night in Bburg when they’re not sure they can get tix without going to StubHub and paying a premium price. If I’m not a lunatic Cassell-loving fan (yes I am), I’d rather see (for example) us play Duke in GBO in the ACCT semis than fork out $50-$100 for a relatively meaningless regular season game, or save up to travel to our 1st/2nd round NCAA site.
If they want to FILL seats, they need to let more students in or offer a premium student ticket package for people who will actually be in town and can get there easily in Feb.
