Virginia Tech is headed in the *right* direction for capacity.
I don't remember the last time I went to a game in Cassell where it was completely full ... as Bill Foster once said, "REALLY full." It just doesn't happen anymore.
There have been some "sellouts" in recent years, but many of those "sellouts" consist of VT dumping a few hundred tickets on StubHub and calling it a sellout. The 2019 attendance for Coppin State was listed at capacity of 9,275. LOL, no. It was a good crowd, but not *that* good.
I know that you and I are roughly the same age, Culpeper, and I don't know how often you come to basketball games, but they just don't fill to capacity anymore, not even Duke, UNC, or UVA. They're only going to lose a few hundred seats with the reno -- Whit hopes to wind up between 8,500 and 9,000 after the update. It just won't make any difference to lose a few seats.
And the idea that VT would ever need *more* capacity just isn't something that I find to be true. It would take many, many years of consistent, very high-level winning (as in multiple Final 4 appearances), to build a basketball fan base big enough to even think about 10,000. It's just not the same as when you and I were young, even in good times like Buzz's Sweet 16 season.
