How do I keep this under 1000 words?

There's been this mantra that one's lifetimes earnings are much greater with a college degree and historically, that's been true. but that correlation has broken down (insert 1000 word essay here) and you can see that with all the student debt, that is, many degrees can't even pay back the investment cost let alone provide a superior lifetime of earnings.

Honestly, we've kinda gone into Wizard of Oz mode*, conferring degrees "and now you are smarter and can make more money"! if businesses start discounting the value of those degrees, that will certainly create some questions about going in the first place. There are some good stories about smart kids just going directly into businesses development programs and prospering. Might almost be like sports, the sooner you get to the next level and start learning there, the better off you will be, you can't be waiting around four years to get into the game if it doesn't add transcending value.

Looking back, I could imagine just taking say, CISCO router courses (back when I loved that kind of stuff) and be on my way.
