in order to maintain high payouts, you could probably only retain 10 members from each conference. It's easy enough to jettison Wake, BC, and Syracuse. Duke is a problem given their academic cred, but maybe they would accept basketball only.
The P12 could dump Cal, Oregon State, or Wash State. Nobody outside of the state capitals would care.

10 schools on each coast, with a state population footprint representing about 40% of the US population. Even with lackluster fan support those numbers would command a nice TV deal. You just need a handful of crossover football games each year, a huge, bi-coastal major event championship game --- it's perfect. Basketball and Olympic sports: a few token trips across the country each year for every school. Nobody cares about these sports from a revenue standpoint anyway.

When this is all over, Wake, Syracuse, BC and similarly situated schools will not be in the mix for the big leagues. No delays or negotiations or declarations of loyalty will change that. We can either realize that now, or wait until we are stuck in the same boat with them. It's ugly and unfortunate but inevitable.
