It appears that someone rented a car in my name back in October, 2019

I've gotten 2 calls from a claims rep for National Car Rental asking about an accident I was involved in while in a rental vehicle. The claims agent was fairly nice and (ears perked in case of a scam) never asked for credit card or driver's license information.

But no, I haven't rented ANY vehicle in at least 4 years, so that's before the 10/2019 date.
And no, when I have rented a vehicle, it's never been that make and model
And no, I haven't been in the state where the accident happened in at least 15 years.

So how did someone rent the vehicle in my name? Our credit card has been hacked a number of times in our past, but I don't remember if it happened around October of 2019 or not. But how did whoever get the other proof needed (usually) to rent a car?

I'm also surprised, if they're trying to confirm if it was me or not, that they haven't compared drivers license numbers or asked if I ever had credit card # XXX issued by Y bank. Or maybe even "What insurance carrier did the renter say they had?"
