Well, let's run through a scenario.


The women's lax team at a private university forms a union and goes to the AD and says they want to get paid $15k per player a year on top of their athletic scholarships or else they will strike. The AD then says we aren't going to pay you anything because your sport already operates at a loss. And if you strike we'll drop women's lax as a sponsored sport and your athletic scholarships will be voided, which means you'll have to pay 40k/year for your tuition if you want to remain a student. Who actually has the winning bargaining position here?

So only sports that actually generate positive revenue would be targets for unionization. And only players at private schools would have the right to unionize. So really the only players that actually would have any power under this model would be FBS football and D1 men's basketball players at private schools.
