As far as the PR nightmare, I think you're taking one case and extrapolating it out too much. Dozens of sports have been eliminated by universities over the past couple years and in most cases there isn't much resistance. And if there is truly grassroots support for a school to keep a sport, then private donors are going to have to step up and fund the sports more directly, the way that a private fundraising drive raised $10 million in 6 weeks to save the UC-Berkeley baseball team from elimination a few years ago.
