I've been in that position as well. You need to remember that while being a manager is an important job, those more experienced experts are probably contributing far more to the bottom line right now. I've gone back and forth between management and more technical jobs over the years. Right now I have 30+ years of broad experience and have built many relationships across the community. My younger PM manages budget, creates reports, has monthly meetings with the customer, fills vacancies, etc. All great things to be able to do, but any number of people can do it. Replacing me is going to be very difficult.

How many coaches and GMs make a lot less that the on field talent? Most of them.
