Price thing perhaps?

I'm new to skiing and cannot figure out why some of these clothing items are so expensive. A local relative was super excited about an Arcteryx shell normally $700 on sale for $150. When I asked why a jacket would sell for $700 in the first place she really couldn't answer. I've been rocking Gerry ski pants and a no-name jacket from Costco for the last two seasons and have no complaints. Now if I could find a pair of gloves that would keep my hands warm I'd probably spend $$$ for those.
