It wouldn't surprise me if the SEC ends up with the same or similar fate


that the WAC had in the late '90s when it decided to expand to 16 full members. Basically, once a conference gets to a certain size then it stops feeling like a conference and it starts feeling more like a confederation.

Also, I am not sure there is a magical number because each conference is unique. 16 happened to be that magical number for the WAC. The Big East expanded to 18, 19, or 20 members before it broke apart. Even the Southern and ECAC were huge at one time. I believe the ECAC was the first and only conference to have members from all 3 division levels at the same time. So it will be interesting to see if the SEC can avoid a similar fate or not. Honestly, it may not be such a bad thing to see the SEC break up into 2 conferences with 8-12 members in each conference.
