IMO, That is the only way to sensibly expand they playoffs

Get rid of the conference championships and replace them with 16 teams in the first round, giving ten auto bids to the ten champs. Let each conference tell you who their champ is, I don't care how they do it.

Keep the remaining 6 teams to #2s (if single table, or division winners, if not) and one indy (if they are better than the worst #2). Match up two team conferences in this round, which means some of the conference championships effectively actually happen, and some of them (ND and the single team conferences) are pitted against each other in that round.

I like this because you can play this round near Dec 3 to let the losers move on to various bowl games, and then have the 8 winners playing on New Years day. Put those quarterfinal games into four traditional bowl games. Let the Rose bowl have its traditional teams, if they are still alive. And the same for the ACC to the Orange, the SEC to the Sugar and the Big 12 to the Cotton (I guess). All of those conferences would likely be through into the second round to be able to host those.

Also on New Years Day, arrange to get ND and the best G5 into the Cotton and the Orange, since everyone is free to make their own 2nd round deal. I'm sure those teams/conferences would rather have that than play the SEC champ in the Sugar.

Then leave the SEC with the worst New Years game usually team #8 in the pecking order. Think Alabama or Georgia vs Louisiana, Memphis, Coastal or SMU. Good luck getting viewers for that!

The Alliance could force this to happen and they should. I think virtually every team would prefer this arrangement over anything else possible, except the SEC. The SEC would have to go along, and would not be allowed to dominate the playoffs beyond just having their best team win it a lot. Fine with me at that point.
