(Edited title) The Travel Distances aren't as big as you'd think...

Hmmm. I did a quick-and-dirty calculation of flight distances from Austin, TX to all of the schools in the Big Ten and the ACC:

Big Ten (In Miles):
Nebraska Lincoln, NE 729
Iowa Iowa City, IA 859
Illinois Urbana-Champaign, IL 866
Indiana Bloomington, IN 884
Purdue West Lafayette, IN 929
Northwestern Evanston, IN 986
Wisconsin Madison, WI 996
Minnesota Minneapolis, MN 1044
Ohio State Columbus, OH 1067
Michigan State East Lansing, MI 1130
Michigan Ann Arbor, MI 1136
Maryland College Park, MD 1318
Penn State University Park, PA 1330
Rutgers New Brunswick, NJ 1485

Average Distance 1054.214286
Average Closest 7 892.7142857

The ACC:
Florida State Tallahassee, FL 804
Georgia Tech Atlanta, GA 819
Louisville Louisville, KY 878
Clemson Clemson, SC 921
Notre Dame South Bend, IN 1015
Wake Forest Winston-Salem, NC 1089
Virginia Tech Blacksburg, VA 1105
Miami Coral Gables, FL 1112
North Carolina Chapel Hill, NC 1149
Duke Durham, NC 1159
NC State Raleigh, NC 1170
Pittsburgh Pittsburgh, PA 1220
Virginia Charlottesville, VA 1224
Syracuse Syracuse, NY 1481
Boston College Boston, MA 1696

Average 1122.8
Average Closest 7 947.2857143

Two ACC schools are in the Central Time Zone (Florida State and Notre Dame) while the Big Ten Schools are more evenly split (didn't have time to research the Indiana time zone divisions).

It's interesting how FAR NORTH Texas would have to fly to get to the Big Ten schools. From a flying standpoint, the Big Ten and ACC don't seem all that different for Texas. Not as important for football, but travel distances are gonna be AWFUL for the Olympic sports, no matter what conference they decide to join.
