They had shenanigans going on with Villanova.


Temple should have become a full member of the Big East Conference, but Villanova kept Temple basketball out of the Big East. Then UConn and Villanova were interested in upgrading from FCS to FBS football, and they needed to make room.

The Big East had to pay for a study at Villanova for FBS football when it wanted to allow Temple back in the second time in order to get Villanova's blessing. I don't know why Villanova was treated like a Princess, but that's what appears to have been going on. In the end Villanova didn't want to build a new stadium to upgrade football, and then Fox came along wanting to pay for a basketball conference. So the Catholic schools left. I hadn't heard a peep from them since until Villanova broke through for the basketball title. UVA did beat Butler in the tournament, but I don't think of them as Big East.
