If you look at the other sports, then you will see in each of the sport a conference (or conferences) has/have built up a national reputation of being dominant in that sport. Those conferences have used that perception to their advantage to get as many teams possible in the NCAA tournament for that sport. Even though most people tend to only watch basketball and football games, I think most people have a general idea of what sports a conference may be dominant in.
