Exactly. Deciding which bolt to tighten and how much


to torque it down along with directing others can determine exempt vs non. Even credentials can make a difference. It's similar to employee vs independent contractor determination - not just whether someone is paid hourly vs a salary.

Some companies also have very closely guarded bonus programs for exempt employees, not talking under the table, shady stuff (although that can happen too) - just programs that most don't know about until they have been with the company for years.
