I asked my wife (sells insurance for 40 years)

If the car died, did they turn the tags in to DMV or deactivate the tags at DMVNow.com? If not, put the car back on the policy.

If he deleted the car and the kid, there’s no coverage. And if the kid goes to purchase his own coverage, it should be before 30 days go by or the kid won’t benefit from having been previously insured.

Also, since the definition of an insured is a “resident relative”, the kid should only be deleted from the policy if he has left the household or if he took out his own insurance policy and the insurance company has the right to know. I would recommend he add the kid back as an occasional driver to another vehicle.
