There is not much hockey interest in south florida ....

you need to look at it from the numbers (and success) at the youth travel club levels (Tier I AAA and Tier II AA). those are the serious fans who would support the local college teams. Virtually all of the successful/talented travel teams are in northern florida around Tampa/St. Pete. Raleigh doesn't have the numbers at all. Outside of the Junior Hurricanes program, there isn't much else there.

Oakland (Det) and Illinois make sense because there are a ton of successful travel programs in the Michigan and Chicago areas. Those are the kinds of kids that would help to sustain the college programs.

UVa and VT just don't have the fanbases in the area to sustain college hockey. Travel programs in both those areas are B-level, low A-level at best. In the Northern Virginia area, there are a handful of higher end clubs (Ashburn, Howard, Little Caps, Team Maryland, Montgomery) but Charlottesville and Blacksburg/Roanoke are just too far away from those club areas.
