UVa's "Friends of Appalachia"

This was shared by some of my UVa friends who are on Facebook. Found it interesting for several reasons.

A few initial thoughts:

- Is it significant that UVa itself is located within the Appalachian mountains, yet is not considered part of "Appalachia?"

- Given the very presence of this issue, exactly how "welcome" should students from "west of Roanoke" feel at that particular school?

- What are the "two key high schools in that region" referenced in the article?

What sayeth The Lounge? Particularly interested in opinions of other folks who hail from "west of Roanoke."
