I grew up in Henry County. I never considered that part of Appalachia. Now
I notice that the Appalachia Regional Commission considers it part of Appalachia. (I guess that makes sense--I've noticed that some of my own natural speech patterns contain elements of the Appalachian English dialect. (I even had a fellow student ask me about them when I was a Virginia Tech undergraduate.)
I haven't looked at the Virginia Tech undergraduate application recently. However, the graduate school application has specific questions about Appalachian heritage. Strictly speaking, my sons (who grew up in Blacksburg) could claim to be from Appalachia and have one parent from Appalachia. They've been disadvantaged having me as a parent, but I don't think its because I'm "from" Appalachia.
